Glossary of terms

ACPET - Australian Council of Private Education and Training
The Australian Council for Private Education and Training is a national industry association who represent independent providers of education and training with Australia. Their website can be found at www.acpet.edu.au.

Assessment
The process undertaken to demonstrate a person has achieved competency in a skill set.

ASQA - Australian Skills Quality Authority
The Australian Skills Quality Authority is Australia’s national regulator for vocational education and training from 1 July 2011. They are responsible for managing the registration of RTOs and ensuring quality of Australia's training and qualifications.

AQF – Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework is a quality assured national framework of qualifications in the school, vocational education and training (VET), and higher education sectors in Australia. It sets out the framework which links all the different qualifications together between the different systems.

AQTF – Australian Quality Training Framework
The Australian Quality Training Framework is the national set of standards which ensure that all training organisations within Australia offer a consistent, high-quality training service for students studying within the VET system.

CEO – Chief Executive Officer

CoE – Confirmation of Enrolment

CRICOS – Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students
An Australian Government list of approved institutions who provide study opportunities to international students.

Competency
Competency is the demonstration of skills and knowledge required in a particular job within a workplace.

Competency Based Training
Every job requires a set of knowledge and skills. This depends on the complexity of the job. Competency based training aims to provide training in both knowledge and practical skills used within the workplace.

DEEWR – Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is the main government department which is responsible for education within Australia.

DIAC – Department of Immigration and Citizenship
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship is the government agency responsible for immigration, visas and citizenship within Australia.

ESOS – Education Services for Overseas Student Act 2000
ESOS is the legislative framework setup to protect the interested of international students by ensuring quality education by setting minimum standard and by providing tuition and financial assurance.

ETEA – Education Training & Employment Australia

IELTS - International English Language Test System
The IELTS is an internationally recognised English test which is accepted in over 135 countries worldwide used by training providers to determine the level of English a student has.

ISM - Intervention Strategy Meeting
The Intervention Strategy Meeting is a meeting between staff and students to work together through issues with performance. Further details can be found in our Course Progress page.

ITC – Industry Training Consultant
A member of ETEA staff who specialises in training within a particular industry.

OSHC – Overseas Student Health Cover
Compulsory health cover for students who come from overseas to study in Australia. More information can be found here.

PRISMS - Provider Registration and International Students Management System
A system developed by DEEWR and DIAC used by training companies such as ETEA for the management and reporting of international students

RPL – Recognition of Prior Learning

RTO – Registered Training Organisation
An organisation who is registered to quality education within Australia.

SSO - Student Support Officer
Person responsible for the support and wellbeing of students.

TAS  - Tuition Assurance Scheme
A scheme setup to ensure that the fees paid by international students are protected.

Unit
Subject / module included in a qualification / course.

VET - Vocational Education and Training
Vocational Education and Training (also known as VET) is education and training that focuses on providing skills for work.

VRQA – Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority
The Victorian State Government body responsible for managing the registration of RTOs operating only within Victoria.

RTOs operating in multiple states & territories as well as dealing with international students (such as ETEA) are now managed by ASQA (The Australian Skills Quality Authority) as of 1st July 2011.
